Tips for going vegan?
Alright, I’m already a vegetarian, and I really want to go vegan. I’m not forcing myself to do it, from the bottom of my heart, I really want to be a vegan. So, I had a few questions:
- How did you deal with any cravings for diary when you first became vegan?
- Is it easy to find brands that don’t test on animals in CVS and stuff? How can I tell if a store’s name brand tests on animals?
- What do you do in a situation where your at a ice cream shop or pizza place with friends?
- Do most vegans eat sugar and honey? Is it your choice as a vegan whether or not to eat sugar and honey?
- What websites have the best vegan recipes?
- Is it hard being vegan sometimes, like when it comes to eating at restaurants and shopping for makeup and stuff?
All help is appreciated. Thanks guys! :]
gerbell, I craved meat for the first few days I was a vegetarian, but that was only because I became a vegetarian "cold-turkey" style, I didn’t wean myself off meat. But meat disgusts me now, I would never go back to it for a million bucks. I’m sure its that way for every long-time vegetarian/vegan.

I personally decided to go vegan a long time ago. I am 16 so my mom still says it’s bad. I know it’s bad for me since I am still growing but I take vitamins and other supplements everyday to help me. I just can’t stand milk or any dairy products. I can’t eat eggs because I never like them. I mean when you drink milk no one ever thinks that your drinking a substance from another animal which is pretty grows if you really think about it. It wasn’t as hard for me. PETA has a list of products that test on animals so you should probably check that out. GOOD LUCK!
i eat sugar but not honey because is makes my stomach churn. sometimes it is hard being a vegan when i get invited to go out for dinner.
The very fact you think your gonna have cravings is a sign you shouldn’t become vegan, I doubt you have cravings for meat?
I never knew what Milk really was. I mean, I knew it came from a cow, but I always figured it was completely different by the time I drank it…….. I now know how gross it is and I could never crave something like that. Or cheese. The substitutes make craving unnessesary anyhow. Rice Milk, Rice Cheese, Soy milk, Soy cheese all good. I also have Veganaise for the mayo and tofutti sour cream.
Being vegan is great but you will find that you have to make some alterations in how you are. If you go to a pizza place, eat before so you can just get a drink or something and hang out. Or meet up afterwards to hang out. Things like that are a pain. Not enough people consider vegans so they don’t have vegan choices on the menu. Many people don’t even know what it is…
All I can say is that going Vegan was 100% a good choice for me. A great choice, really. I haven’t looked back and I am always finding better foods to eat. Health is important and so are the animals and the planet. We can have all that and great food, so why not?
Good for you.
I was vegetarian for 5 years and then went vegan. I’ve been vegan for 13 years now. Just as you said you are disgusted by meat now, I’m the same way with Ice Cream, milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, etc. Your tastes change. One thing I’ve noticed from talking to people trying to go vegan is that cheese is hardest. That’s because there’s a lot of caseine in cheese and caseine has addictive properties. Get through the cheese addiction and with some time you’ll adjust just fine. If you’re at an ice cream shop or pizza place with friends, at first you just tell them you’ve decided to go vegan. After awhile they’ll know that about you and won’t even think twice. True friends respect your uniqueness. I eat sugar and honey–others don’t. Do what you think is best for you and animals and the environment. Don’t worry about everyone else. I don’t find it hard to be vegan. It’s my way of life. Good luck to you!
I’m going to try my best to answer your questions in a numerical order.
1. If you truly care about the cause, you shouldn’t have cravings, or your cravings should fade. I doubt that as a vegetarian you crave meat; it’s the exact same concept. If you craved meat when you first became vegetarian but it eventually faded, the same would probably happen with dairy/egg products.
2. It’s very easy if you keep yourself updated with cruelty-free brands. You may already know of it, but PETA offers research on cruelty-free cosmetics brands at this website: http://www.caringconsumer.com/
Products will normally mention on the label somewhere that they don’t test on animals. In terms of store brands, store brands typically don’t test on animals because they are mere imitations of products that have already been tested for safety. When in doubt, just avoid store brands, because unless the brand informs you, you never really know.
3. You remember that living a vegan lifestyle is worth giving up simple UNHEALTHY luxuries like ice cream and pizza, and you remember that you can go to the supermarket/co-op to buy delicious VEGAN ice cream and pizza!
4. Technically, honey isn’t vegan. So if one was a true vegan, they would not consume honey. Sugar is vegan, so if you choose to, you could eat sugar within a vegan diet.
5. PETA has great recipes, but honestly, you can find vegan recipes ANYWHERE online! If you’re ever curious about a specific recipe, you can literally just search it up in google. (for example, "Vegan Fettucini Alfredo", or "Vegan vanilla cupcake reciple")
6. It definitely is a challenge being vegan, I’m not going to lie, but it is SO rewarding, and with today’s technology, it is much easier than you may think to find replacements for all sorts of animal products that you once enjoyed consuming. Again, with shopping for makeup, you just have to know some facts ahead of time, and ALWAYS do your research! If you’re ever in doubt about whether a brand tests or not, you can look it up on google and usually find some sort of relevant information.
GOOD LUCK! I know you can do it
I am so proud everytime I hear of somebody embarking on a new
vegetarian or vegan lifestyle <3
